Between Light and Dark

January 3, 2026 - Atlantic Beach, North Carolina.

What caught my attention here was the light moving across the wet sand.

The sunset itself is only a small part of the photograph. Most of the image is actually fairly dark and cool, but then you have these areas where the last light of the day is reflecting off the water and cutting through all of that blue.

I like the way the shoreline moves through the photograph too. Your eye starts with the sunset, follows the water along the beach, and eventually disappears into the darker part of the image.

There is something about that transition that I like. The day isn’t quite over, but it is getting there. You still have this intense light on the horizon while everything closer to you is already settling into evening.

I think that is probably why I took the photograph in the first place. It wasn't simply the sunset. It was that brief period when the light and the darkness are both there at the same time.
